This electric new play takes place entirely in a car. A man and his mixed- race grandson, meeting for the first time, drive to Minneapolis to bring the smart and sullen fifteen year old to his birth father after his mother’s death. In those 24 hours, each of their lives will be altered in ways they never expected, even as they arrive during the most tumultuous time in the city’s history.
Blesssing’s trademark intelligence, wit and insight into the human condition are all on crackling display in this remarkable and timely drama, showcasing one of America’s best playwrights at the height of his formidable story-telling powers.
King of the Kosher Grocers
by local playwright Joe Minjares.

The show is a warm-hearted comedy set in 1991 on the North Side of Minneapolis! Silver’s Market has been a Jewish deli (now also selling collard greens and tortillas) and neighborhood institution for fifty years. When city inspectors threaten to close the place down, old friends Silvers, Chavez and Mooney (a Jew, a Mexican, and an African-American) are bound and determined to keep it open. Will they succeed? You KNOW they will, and how they do it will keep you laughing all night long!
The production was directed by Stage North artistic Director Peter Moore and featured long time Twin Cities favorites Michael Tezla as Silvers, James A. Williams as Mooney and playwright Minjares as Chavez. Pearce Bunting, Melanie Wermacher, Ian McCarthy and Domino D’Lorion rounded out the cast.
